The Grenfell Public Inquiry criticised the past failure to release building safety research. The government is acting by publishing this report.

The initial research was completed in November 2020, to inform whether there was merit in establishing a work programme to look at construction product standards.

This was superseded by the establishment of the National Regulator for Construction Products (within the Office for Product Safety and Standards) and the Building Safety Regulator.

These two new regulators oversee standards mentioned in statutory advice. This research report was shared with both bodies to inform their future work programme.

The government has published a consultation on proposals for system wide reform of the construction products regime. Proposals include greater oversight of the standards setting process by the regulator, increased transparency of the standards setting process, and measures to drive the quality of standards.
